Nikon will help diabetics

The Japanese Nikon company, working with Verili, is working on early detection technology for diabetes. These conditions can lead to total blindness if the patient is not adequately treated.

Diabetes is an extremely serious disease which, in the absence of proper treatment, can lead to death. However, not only is diabetes itself a high risk, but also related diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and macular edema, which can lead to blindness.

Nikon, along with Verily engineers, is working on a technology that will help prevent such diseases by early detection. Nikon intends to use its expertise in the manufacture of optical equipment, while its partner will provide machine learning technology.

A common effort will be to develop a device that will examine the eyes of patients and then look for signs of diseases caused by diabetes. Usually they are difficult to detect, but thanks to artificial intelligence, this task should become much easier.
